Singing and Community
Trees converse beneath our feet and share information that is important to the health of the whole forest. Via a network of soil fungi, they search for kin, send warning signals about environmental change and transfer nutrients to neighbouring plants.
Similarly, when we come together to sing in a group, significant changes take place within our own chemical networks. Our brains become flooded with feel-good endorphins, serotonin and dopamine, forcing the stress hormone cortisol to reduce. We experience a spike in proteins that boost our immunity. And, thanks to an increase in oxytocin, the hormone of bonding, we are filled with a profound sense of belonging and kinship.
In other words, much like the trees, group singing gives rise to a kind of glorious alchemy, which actually creates community. In the firm belief that nature knows best, Isobel aspires through singing to build connection, friendship, relief, comfort, resilience and joy. After all, as 19th Century French poet Minnie Aumonier wrote:

There is always music among the trees in the garden but our hearts must be very quiet to hear it
